Libertarianism 101 Workshop
Why Libertarianism?
Do you dislike The blackmailer? or the smuggler? The speculator? The profiteer? The litterer? The smoker? The moneylender? The fat capitalist pig employer? The employer of child labor? etc., people.
Most probably yes.
But why? What have they done wrong?
The people discussed in this workshop are generally considered villainous and the functions they perform as harmful. However, the thrust of this workshop is to show you three things:
- These people are guilty of no wrongdoing of a violent nature;
- In virtually every case, they benefit society; and
- If we prohibit their activities, we do so at our loss.
The impetus of this workshop is Libertarianism. The basic premise of this philosophy is that it is illegitimate to engage in aggression against non-aggressors. What is meant by aggression is not assertiveness, argumentativeness, competitiveness, adventurousness, quarrelsomeness, or antagonism. What is meant by aggression is the use of violence, such as that which takes place in murder, rape, robbery, mob lynching, or kidnapping.
Libertarianism does not imply pacifism; it does not forbid the use of violence in defense even in retaliation against violence. Libertarian philosophy condemns only the initiation of violence – the use of violence against a nonviolent person or his property.
